Recording Sketches
These are sketches I made while listening to my observational audio. I attempted to interpret the raw audio into a visual medium, translating specific sounds in pencil strokes.
The cawing of seagulls became sharp almost triangular strokes, the rushing waves became long downward strokes followed by short sharp up and down motions and sounds like the crunching of sand underfoot turned into tight controlled loops.

Soundscape
At one point during the project I had the idea to create a "soundscape", a landscape of sound. Using recordings of various places I would attempt to create and environment using only sound. For this I did a small sketch of where I would place the speakers that would produce the individual sounds.
Below is also a list of sounds I would have included in each of the areas in an attempt to recreate a seaside environment.
Sea: Waves, Boats, Sea foam, Seagulls
Sea: Waves, Boats, Sea foam, Seagulls
Beach: Children, Crunching Sand Underfoot
Cliffs/Boardwalk: Arcades, Fairground, Music, Seagulls
Main Sea must sound close. All else must sound slightly far in this order: Far Sea, Beach, Cliffs/Boardwalk
In the end I did not end up creating my soundscape but it definitely helped further my ideas. Most notably this is where I began focusing on creating an atmosphere through sound alone, something that would be the base for my work even through to my final piece.
Map of possible locations for placement of “Noisebomb”
I’m creating a portable popup sound installation. This
installation will involve a PA system which pumps out sounds of the beach and
sea in urban locations, forcing anyone in the vicinity to experience it. I’m
interested in seeing peoples reactions to my “nosebomb” and as such I’ll be
recording it.
The numbered locations on the below map are possible
locations for where I’ll place my “noisebomb”.
·
Open, natural space despite being in the middle
of a city.
·
Mixing of Sea/Beach sounds and park sounds (bird
song, leaves, wind) is an interesting mix.
·
Few people but not completely empty. People
usually come here to get away from others and other parts of the busy city
(like the noise).
·
Newest part of an old city.
·
Busiest part often times.
·

·
Buses, very loud.
·
Lots of people, stuck, waiting
·
Semi-Enclosed. Echo?

· Good amount of people near lunchtime, low but decent amount rest of the day
· People more open to 'art' stuff.
