‘Untitled Ambience’
After visiting Brighton for my final major project I originally started looking at silent films, where as later I looked more at examples of how sound effects people in art. After looking at people who played sounds in public places I experimented with a similar approach but that turned out to be ineffective for technical reasons, I wanted to focus on creating my own sounds from recordings I gathered with the intention of observing peoples individual reactions to them.
A lot of my stuff at the beginning was rather unfocused when I made waveform style experiments, where as the work I’ve been making leading up to the end of the project is more tailored towards people's reactions. My biggest challenge in the earlier stages was figuring out exactly what to do, and I had to refocus a number of times after trying different thing.
Most important for me to discover is to see how other people react to my final sound piece; I’m open to any responses. I’m not typically the kind of artist that sets out to make anything for a specific reason, I like to go ahead and make something first then observe it’s overall reception. I’ve learnt that’s how I best progress ideas and take things further.
In reflection: if I was to start this project again I would at least try and accomplish the public experiments better, probably using smaller spaces to make the sound play more effective to a smaller group of people. I’d have liked to focus on silent films more on this project to see where I could have taken that, as although I couldn’t find the right idea at the time; I found the silent films I researched very interesting.
In Summary:
Doing this has inspired me to focus more clearly on how people react to what I do, I was never one to care much about how people felt of my work, but having done this, it’s an area I’ll definitely be working on more in the future.
I’ve found sound in general a fascinating area to explore in this project, normally I’ve found sound mediums somewhat less explored in art generally, but now it’s inspired me to learn more about this area in general.
